Congratulations to Glen Jarvis for winning the Jenny Scott Award for 2023 at our awards night on 6 December 2023.  Mary Verus and Pam Hibberd were also awarded life memberships to Darwin Chorale.

Take a look at why these amazing members were celebrated:

Jenny Scott Award: Glen Jarvis
Glen joined the chorale for Evita and soon became a valuable member of the Darwin Chorale not only for his singing skills but for his contribution to the chorale as a whole.

During Evita Glen arrived early to each rehearsal and assisted in setting up the directors tables, props or set and keyboard.  At the end of the rehearsal Glen would be one of the last to leave having assisted again in packing everything away. Glen took the initiative and built a mock set to use during rehearsal to assist cast understanding the set movement and sizing which assisted in cast placement.

Glen was also vital to finishing off the set for Evita and assisting in the build along the way. Glen built the chocolate wheel, planed, hung doors, fitted handles and polished locks over weeks leading up to the show. During the week of the show he constructed the balustrade plus assisted in teaching skills to younger cast members and he and two others screwed all the marble look floor to the main stage and generally anything asked of him. Without Glen we would not have had the set complete. Of course, after the show Glen was there dismantling sets and pulling up the flooring in bump out.

When it came to Disney again Glen was always there to help with bump in and out of rostra and rectifying any issues such as stabilising the decking and adding handrails.

Glen would not miss helping with the little things such as placement of chairs for rehearsal, carrying large rubbish to the waste bins. Glen never just turns up to sing. It is with this dedication and support for the Chorale that he is recommended Glen be awarded the 2023 Jenny Scott Award.

Life Membership: Pam Hibberd
Pam is a long serving Chorale member commencing in 2002 who continues to sing in the choir.

Pam over her many years with the choir has been secretary for the Darwin Chorale commencing this role in 2006 and carrying out this role for 4 years and being part of the committee for 8 years. Pam was still on the committee which instigated the change from a committee to a board structure and was valuable in her input.

Pam although no longer on the Board or performance team still takes care of our uniforms and has done so for about 10 years. She informs singers from where they can purchase and coordinates with the suppler and stores spares.

Pam actively assisted with fundraising events such as Bunnings BBQ’s, Quiz nights, raffles, Deck chair cinema in the past and still attends to support the Chorale.

Nowadays Pam will opt out of performing in the stage shows and cabaret style concerts however this does mean she is not involved. Pam comes along to rehearsals and learns the songs and once staging commences she is involved behind the scenes with costumes and assisting with quick changes and more recent times as part of our Front of House team.

Pam has made a valuable contribution to the Chorale.

Life Membership: Mary Verus
Mary Verus is a long standing member of the Darwin Chorale who has performed in most of the Chorale shows over the last 24 years.

Over her time with the Chorale Mary has volunteered on committees as an ad hoc member and involves herself in assisting in preparing for concerts, suggesting ideas for future planning. She willingly assists in music sorting and cleaning after concerts and has done so for years.

Over the last few years Mary has volunteered and willingly organised the after show parties for concerts, sourced gifts for key personnel.

Fundraising is always high on Mary’s agenda and she relentlessly seeks sponsorship/ gifts for fundraising events and for performances such as Evita. Her dedication to approach companies around town has lead to many successful quiz night prizes and raffles.

Mary also makes herself known to new members and welcomes them into the choir.

The Chorale has benefitted over the past 24 years with Mary as a member.
